Besides a traditional barbershop repertoire,
RSC offers a wide range of both contemporary songs and traditional
folk music. RCS also gives yearly Christmas concerts together with
the male barbershop choir/chorus the
EntertainMen, concerts that attract about 8000 people every
year.
Barbershop
Rönninge Show Chorus is a female barbershop chorus. The barbershop
style originated in USA at the beginning of the 20th century when
the men were waiting their turn in barbershops and spent the time
singing and harmonizing.
Barbershop music is sung "a cappella" (without musical
accompaniment), by either male or female choruses or quartets (no
mixed groups), in order to gain the special over-tone pattern that
distinguish barbershop from other choral singing. It is sung in
four parts; tenor, lead, baritone and bass and it is the lead part
that sings the melody. The tenor sings above the melody and the
baritone and bass mostly sing below the melody.
Traditionally barbershop music are well-known songs from the 20's
and 30's arranged in barbershop style but new songs and arrangements
are continuously added to the world of barbershop music. The lyrics
is mostly, but not always, written in American English. Traditional
barbershop arrangements are mandatory when competing in barbershop,
but most choruses and quartets include non barbershop material in
their show packages as well.
RSC is a member of a large female barbershop organization called
Sweet Adelines International (SAI). SAI started in Tulsa, Oklahoma
in 1945 and has as its motto Harmonize the world. SAI is a world
wide organization of women singers who value education, performance,
and personal development. The organization is divided in a number
of regions, where RSC belongs to the Nordic Light Region # 32.
Each year regional competitions are held and the regional winners
compete in an international competition.
Directors
| Britt-Helene Bonnedahl |
 |
Britt-Heléne Bonnedahl is a dynamic woman of strong character who is well-known within the barbershop community. Her knowledge of barbershop is well recognised and she leaves no-one unmoved. We, the 140 members of RSC, have the benefit of Britt-Heléne as our leader, coach and friend. Her teacher-training has surely been to great advantage when drilling the choir to its various successes over the years.
It was in 1976 that Britt-Heléne became involved in the world of barbershop and she has been competing with the choir for over 20 years. She tells us:- in my role as leader I have the opportunity to see others grow and develop which I find fascinating. To be able to share my knowledge is one of my strengths, together with that of having learnt the names of everyone in the choir!
In our choir we have seen the emergence of not only good singers but successful leaders. It is a great spring board for personal development which even extends into our professional lives.
Britt-Heléne continues:- I like to analyse and add structure. Education is also a great passion. To be able to electrify and touch audiences with our 100% commitment is for me the greatest thing. My highest goal the next time we compete is to achieve a top result with high scores, quite simply, to do our absolute best.
Each and every member of the choir is aware of the commitment required so we can attain the highest of levels and we are extremely privileged to have such a warm and generous feeling within the group. The support we give each other is marvelous. There are times in life when we all have our rough patches and that's when it's so great to have the choir behind you with all the support that entails. In conclusion, my life has been greatly enriched through my role as choir leader.
| Anna Alvring |
 |
Anna Alvring, a bubbling fresh breeze, has established herself as Co-director at RSC and has the ability to inspire the choir to great heights. Her abundance of energy encourages choir members to add that little bit extra when they might otherwise feel there is nothing left to give. Since the beginning of May 2006 Anna has shared the role of Director together with her mentor, Britt-Heléne Bonnedahl:- an uncommonly good combination.
Anna has a musical background and teaches both music and maths. In her words:- I started singing barbershop in 1986 largely due to my father who felt I needed to overcome my shyness. I eventually became Director of the Stockholm Choir and it is being involved in this way which has helped me to find my leadership qualities and, in my role as leader, to understand the balance between positive reinforcement and knowledge. I like to give of myself. I think there should be room for both laughter and, with in reason, a chance to tease . My strength, which I gladly share with others, lies in music theory. Rhythm and pulse are very important to me.
Anna continues:- my vision is to lead a choir competing at the top level, to reach the highest goal - to win GOLD! And when you are having fun along the way it's no strain to push yourself that little bit harder to reach these goals. All things considered it seems anything is possible for Rönninge Show Chorus. We are a choir that needs to perform to a high standard - that's when we feel just great, even if the most important thing of all is to know that we have given our all.
Quartets
During the years, many of the members i RCS have participated in
the quartet competitions. In 1989, the Swedish quartet Growing
Girls was the first non-american quartet to win the international
quartet competition, which made them Queens of Harmony. Two of the
Growing Girls members even managed to win the title again, this
time with Swinglish Mix in 2002.
